General Education Leaning Outcomes (GELOs) and 21st Century Skills
General Education is designed in alignment with the philosophy and objectives of undergraduate education, as well as the educational philosophy of Walailak University, under the framework “Academic Excellence with Professional Skills.” Accordingly, the identity of Walailak University graduates emphasizes nurturing individuals who are grateful, disciplined, service-minded, and capable leaders — graduates who are both good and competent. Being good refers to graduates who embody gratitude, discipline, volunteer spirit, and professional ethics and morality. Being competent refers to graduates who demonstrate analytical and creative thinking, leadership skills, and the ability to apply knowledge effectively and proficiently in real-world contexts.
The production of Walailak University graduates is driven by the structure of undergraduate curricula, which consist of three components: general education, specialized courses, and free electives. While specialized courses focus on providing knowledge and expertise in students’ chosen fields, General Education courses are intended to enhance generic skills. These courses specify 13 GELOs, which cover the definition of General Education as outlined in the 2022 Undergraduate Program Standards, and emphasize comprehensive 21st-century skills. In particular, every General Education course highlights the 4Cs — Critical Thinking, Creative Thinking, Communication, and Collaboration.
Graduates who complete General Education Courses are therefore equipped to handle volatility and change in today’s and tomorrow’s world across all dimensions. They become lifelong learners who can integrate knowledge across disciplines to develop, solve problems, adapt, and thrive in diverse global societies. They are strong citizens who create value, benefits, and opportunities for themselves and for society at both local and international levels.
