SOLGEN Lecturer attended the expert meeting and join in criticizing the curriculum of Master of Philosophy Program in Product Design at Silpakorn University

On Tuesday, March 14, 2023, Associate Professor Rewat Sukkasikan, a faculty member in the General Education department of the School of Languages and General Education at Walailak University, was invited to participate in a curriculum evaluation meeting for the Master of Fine Arts program in Product Design at Silpakorn University, Wang Tha Phra Campus. This meeting, attended by qualified experts, aimed to assess and discuss the curriculum in order to gather insights for curriculum development and improvement. The goal was to enhance the quality of education management and produce high-quality graduates who meet the standards of further academic certification.

SOLGEN organized a camp for conservation of natural resources and environment for term 3/2022

Associate Professor Dr. Surin Maisrikrod, Deputy Rector for Administration of Walailak University and Acting Dean of the School of Languages and General Education, presided over the opening ceremony of the camp for the conservation of natural resources and the environment, as part of the elective course GED65-147.

The aim of the project was to provide students studying the aforementioned course with practical skills through a residential camp experience in Krabi and Hat Noppharat Thara – Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park. The camp took place from March 4th to 6th, 2023 with 112 students participating. The event was honored by the presence of Major Police Lieutenant Colonel Sankara, the Commander of the Border Patrol Police Battalion, and instructors from the Border Patrol Police Training Center in Srinakarinthra District, Thung Song District, Nakhon Si Thammarat, who acted as mentors and led team-building activities and recreational programs.

The School of Languages and General Education is dedicated to developing the quality of general education courses in order to achieve the university’s goals. In addition to classroom teaching, the practical skills acquired in the GED65-147 course, focusing on the conservation of natural resources and the environment, aim to stimulate and cultivate a sense of teamwork, communication skills, and the ability to adapt to the changing global environmental conditions, enabling students to effectively solve various daily life problems. The activities such as wilderness trekking, studying environmental systems in the national park, and reducing plastic packaging used during the camp, align with the university’s motto “Excellence, Goodness, and Happiness” and respond to the sustainable development policy (SDG: Sustainable Development) in terms of education and the importance of protecting and preserving natural resources and the climate for future generations.

SOLGEN organized mangrove forest restoration project

On February 14, 2022, the School of Languages and General Education, in collaboration with a delegation from Japan, led 20 representatives of Walailak University students in a reforestation project at Sa Bua Village, Tha Sala District, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, under the “Mangrove Reforestation Project in lieu of Gratitude for the Land and Environmental Conservation Awareness” program.

SOLGEN organized a personality development project under the theme “Good Speaking and Good Personality for Success”

On Wednesday, February 1, 2023, from 13.00 to 18.00, the School of Languages and General Education organized a personality development project on the topic “Good speaking and Good Personality for Success” at the Architecture and Design Building in the Srithammarat conference room to provide knowledge about Personality development for both internal and external students and to prepare students for work. The personality that has been developed and improved, both internally and externally, can create a good impression on those who see it and can also coexist with others in society.

Within the event, students were able to transfer knowledge from speakers including Seksan Akson (Medical Technologists), 1st runner-up, Miss Perfect Thailand 2022, and Mr. Akkarapatphat Siriradanan, an outstanding alumnus of Walailak University for the year 2021. Students gain knowledge from the speakers’ direct experience, ask questions, express their opinions, and practice good personalities. This activity has 150 students participating in various faculties. It was found that 90% of students in the project were satisfied at the “very good” level.

Summary of Research Publications in January 2023

The School of Languages and General Education had several research papers accepted and published in January 2023.

Assist. Prof. Dr. Budi Waluyo’s paper, “The Pedagogical Use of Gamification in English Vocabulary Training and Learning in Higher Education,” was accepted by *Education Sciences* (Scopus Index, Q2). Another paper by Dr. Waluyo, “Active Learning and Professional Development: A Case Study of Thai Chinese Teachers,” also got accepted by *Education Sciences* (Scopus Index, Q1).

Dr. Waluyo’s study, “Antecedents and Effects of Students’ Enjoyment and Boredom in Synchronous Online English Courses,” was accepted by the *Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development* (Scopus Index, Q1).

Assist. Prof. Kiki Juli Anggoro and Aj. Uswatun Khasanah’s paper, “Nearpod Slides to Enhance Students’ Self-Study,” was published in *SiSAL Journal* (Scopus Index, Q2).

Dr. Mark Treve’s manuscript, “The Future of Higher Education in a Post-COVID-19 World: New Directions, New Possibilities,” was accepted by *Computers and Education* (Scopus Index, Q1).

Lastly, Assist. Prof. Dr. Budi Waluyo and Aj. Thinley Wangdi’s paper, “Reasons and Impacts of Camera On and Off During Synchronous Online English Teaching and Learning: Insights from the Thai EFL Context,” was published in *CALL-EJ* (Scopus Index, Q1).

SOLGEN lecturer lead research team to collect data and provide knowledge about the importance of nutmeg to the community

On January 21, 2023, Assistant Professor Dr. Laksanara Kwanchum, a lecturer of General Education together with the research team Carbon sequestration valuation project in the area of Suan Chan Village and Ron Na Village Ron Phibun District Nakhon Si Thammarat. This is the beginning of field data collection with the Ban Suan Chan community. The research team contributed knowledge to the farmers in the area about the importance of preserving nutmeg that has the ability to store a large amount of carbon. It will help reduce greenhouse gases and reduce global warming very well. This is the beginning of cooperation between the government and communities collaborate to drive forward the carbon credit trading policy.

SOLGEN joined in making merit ceremony 2023

Arts and Culture Working Group, the School of Languages and General Education (SOLGEN), the Center for Cultural and Sports Promotion, and the Buddhism Club of Walailak University held an event to continue the merit-giving tradition of the year 2023 on Thursday, 12 January 2023 at 5:30 a.m. at Nalantham, Chopradu Food Center, Walailak University, led by the administrators of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Surin Maisrikrot, Acting Vice President, teachers, and the School of Languages and General Education staff joined in continuing the merit-making tradition. Give alms to the fire, organize food booths, and participate in making merit by offering rice and dry food to the monks to welcome the new year 2023 to continue and preserve the tradition of making merit by giving alms to the fire.

Tutoring Activities of General Education Courses 2/2022

General Education Department Organized tutoring activities of term 2/2022 for students studying in general education courses. In online tutoring before the midterm exam during 2-10 November 2022 and before the final exam during 14-23 December 2022 via the Facebook page “SOLGEN ติวต่อเติมแต้ม” for all 7 subjects as follows:

2. Communication Techniques in Contemporary World
3. Thai Civilization and Global Citizen
4. Philosophy, Ethics and Critical Thinking
5. Knowledge Inquiry and Research Methods
6. Environmental Conservation and Global Warming
7. Innovation and Entrepreneurship

There were students attending the tutoring activities. Total of more than 2,000 students in all subjects and the satisfaction assessment of students in the tutoring was very good. (Evaluation score is more than 4.57)
