SOLGEN Organizing Volunteer Projects Reducing Educational Disparities

On May 17-19, 2022, School of Languages and General Education (SOLGEN) organized a project SOLGEN’s volunteer to reduce educational inequality at Khok Kloi Subdistrict, Takua Thung District, Phang Nga Province.
SOLGEN Volunteer Project is a project that gives students the opportunity to study at Walailak University to use the skills and knowledge gained from studying in general education courses and applied in teaching Thai and English to children of migrant workers in Phang Nga province at Burma Young Buddhist Cultural and Learning Center, Khok Kloi Subdistrict, Takua Thung District, Phang Nga Province. Because in the aforementioned areas there are schools that teach children of Burmese workers to have language skills to live in a country other than their native country.


The School of Languages and General Education saw greater policy importance, especially at the international level this can be seen from the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations in Article 4, ensuring that everyone has an inclusive and equal quality education and support lifelong learning opportunities. Article 10 reduces internal inequality among nations and Article 16 promotes peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development for all with access to justice and building effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.


Creating a SOLGEN project, volunteering to reduce educational inequality Therefore, it is a part that will increase educational opportunities for these children in order to create a new generation of children with knowledge of both Thai and Burmese languages and provide these children with skills and knowledge that are useful for life and careers in the future.


The project will raise awareness of the volunteer spirit of Walailak University students. Responding to the university’s fourth strategic issue in creating and developing graduate quality. In response to the National Strategy ,Strategy 4 promote activities to develop academic and social potential of students. including promoting the development of quality students Knowledge, morality, discipline, responsibility has leadership qualities, has a public mind, is both a “good person and a smart person”.


On this occasion, SOLGEN would like to thank all of support that have been delivered to the project. The project has already been a representative to deliver kindness from everyone to the children.

SOLGEN 5S: 2nd self-audit

On May 18, 2022, the School of Languages and General Education hosted Walailak University 5S committee on the subject of the first round of 5S audit 2022.
The primary goal of this audit was to ensure that all Walailak University faculty members adhere to and implement the WU 5S criteria and also to determine the evaluation score for the faculty.
On this particular occasion, and on behalf of the Dean the chair of 5S WG delivered the opening speech. In his speech, he mentioned to the committee that the Dean has established a 5S working group at SOLGEN, whereby the WG meets every month to carry out inspections and conduct self-audits every three months merely to improve the working environment for all faculty members while adhering to Walailak University’s policy.
In addition, the chair of the 5S WG highlighted on what the WG has been doing to maintain the 5S standard at SOLGEN, which was followed by a one-hour the state of 5S at SOLGEN presentation led by administrative and academic officers.
In conclusion, the University committee informed the faculty to wait for its score in the few weeks’ time.
The chair of the 5S WG delivered the closing remarks and thanked the committee for their valuable time spent conducting the 1st audit for fiscal year 2022.

SOLGEN held a meeting to track research progress and research with international cooperation.

            On Wednesday, April 27, 2022, Research Department, School of Languages and General Education organized a meeting to follow up on research progress of faculty members in the school, including following up on research projects in collaboration with faculty members from Batangas State University, Philippines.

            At the meeting Asst. Prof. Mark Bedoya Ulla, Head of the research, clarified the results of cooperation with cooperation partners and plans to develop research projects, that will take place in the future. In the period of May – June, the research facility has been working with the research institute committee to organize the first SOLGEN research writeshop series project, which will have four sub-activities as follows:

  1. Writing an individual research manuscript
  2. Writing a research proposal for external funding
  3. Writing an international collaborative paper
  4. Presentation and Activity Evaluation

 

            However, at the meeting there was a report on the research results and exchange research data including a review plan and evaluation of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Walailak University and Batangas State University, Philippines that will take place in May 2022.

SOLGEN Organize project "Additional tutoring before taking
Thai language proficiency exam (exit exam)

On April 20, 2022, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, the School of Languages and General Education organized additional tutoring activities for students before taking the Thai language proficiency exam (exit exam) by teachers from the Thai subject and academics as tutoring assistants to encourage students to prepare and review Thai language knowledge before the Exit Exam. There were over 200 students attended the tutoring.
The project’s success was measured by the satisfaction of the participants with an average value of 4.45 of 5, and the majority of students who participated gained knowledge and enjoyment

Tutoring Activities of General Education Courses 3/2021

General Education Department Organized tutoring activities of term 3/2021 for students studying in general education courses. In online tutoring before the midterm exam during 9 February– 24 February 2022 and before the final exam during 23 March– 8 April 2022 via the Facebook page “SOLGEN ติวต่อเติมแต้ม” for all 7 subjects as follows:

1. Thai for Contemporary Communication

2. Communication Techniques in Contemporary World

3. Thai Civilization and Global Citizen

4. Philosophy, Ethics and Critical Thinking

5. Knowledge Inquiry and Research Methods

6. Environmental Conservation and Global Warming

7. Innovation and Entrepreneurship

There were students attending the tutoring activities. Total of more than 2,000 students in all subjects and the satisfaction assessment of students in the tutoring was very good. (Evaluation score is more than 4.65)

Exercise activities and promote healthy activities for children, women, and people with disabilities

Aj. Piyanut Khunsawat, a lecturer of General Education Department, School of Languages and General Education was invited as a guest speaker and lead exercise and promote healthy activities for children, women, and people with disabilities at Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Nakhon Si Thammarat under food processing and career development program for the department during February-March 2022, by providing services and disseminating exercise knowledge through activities “Yoga for health” and organized recreational activities.

The activities meet the Sustainable Development Goals as follows:

Goal 2: Zero hunger, achieve food security and enhance nutrition for all people of all ages (2.1/2.2)

Goal 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote welfare for all at all ages (3.4)

Goal 5: Achieve gender equality and strengthen women and girls (5.1/5.C)

Student Support Working Group of SOLGEN organized a tutorial for students of GEN64-123 and GEN61-129

This week the Student Support Working Group of SOLGEN organized a tutorial for students of GEN64-123 and GEN61-129. The tutorial aimed to help the students prepare themselves for the upcoming final exam. Approximately 150 students enthusiastically participated in the 2-hour long activity. The tutorial was hybrid, so it was both online and onsite. Ajran Uswatun Khasanah and Ajran Lim Chong Ewe led the tutorial of GEN64-123 while Ajran Nur Amelia gave a review of GEN61-129. From the activity evaluation form, students were very satisfied. The evaluation score is 4.67 out of 5. A student commented, “I had fun and gained a lot of useful knowledge.” Another student wrote, “Thank you for organizing this event. I really like it.” Students also mentioned that they wanted to have the same activity the following term. In short, the activity was a success and the Student Support Working Group will prepare even more fun and engaging activities for Walailak University students in the future.
