National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU)
National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) is one of Taiwan’s oldest universities, founded in 1922 with a focus on producing education professionals. Today, the university offers a wide range of full-degree programs in various fields. It currently has around 16,000 students and 1,600 staff members.
NTNU is committed to teaching using English as a medium of instruction, following the government’s policy. The government also provides funding. The university has established centers that offer various services to help students improve their English skills. There is also a policy that encourages students to study courses in English, and students have the option to choose courses taught in English, instead of Chinese, which is the main language.
Lecturers are motivated to use English in their teaching by incentives, such as being exempt from student evaluations for two semesters. It has been found that lecturers who use EMI (English as a Medium of Instruction) tend to receive higher evaluation scores. Additionally, the university focuses on communication skills in teaching, and it is believed that a lecturer’s dedication to their work is reflected in their teaching methods, both verbal and non-verbal communication.
One of the advantages of using EMI is that it provides students with a global experience, allowing them to connect with others. NTNU has a center dedicated to supporting EMI, called the Centre for Academic Literacy (CAL), which helps create an environment that encourages the use of English to further develop students.
